- The trigger for service: how much accumulation calls out a crew, and whether salting happens automatically after a snowfall or ice warning, or only on request.
- Start and end dates for the season, and what happens with off-season or one-off callouts.
- A clear price breakdown, not a single lump sum, so you know what you’re paying for and what counts as an extra.
If a contract is missing any of these, ask for them in writing before you sign. A provider that can’t answer these questions clearly is telling you something about how the rest of the relationship will go.
Ask About Insurance Before You Ask About Price
This is the part property owners skip, and it’s the one that matters most. If a contractor’s equipment or crew causes an injury or damage on your property, responsibility should sit with the contractor — not with you. Ask for proof of general liability coverage and current WorkSafeBC standing before you sign anything. A contractor who can’t produce that documentation on request is a risk you’re taking on, not one they’re covering.
